Men and Gender Justice
CHSJ is a global pioneer in working with men and boys for gender equality. The work is based on the premise that gender equality has to be an aspiration for everyone in society and not for women alone. We at CHSJ believe that gender equality is only possible if men too believe in ‘equality’ and change their own beliefs and practices accordingly. This requires men to examine their own privileges and how their own behaviours come in the way for full and equal opportunities for women and girls – including their near and dear ones, in the family as well as in society. CHSJ has implemented various projects over the last fifteen years and has built a large body of knowledge and resources on the subject. CHSJ is a key resource organisation on this topic in India and in the South Asian region.

Health Governance
Health and well-being are a key Sustainable Development Goal, and there is an increasing consensus globally that health services for citizens should primarily be supported by the State. India has made rapid strides economically, but the poor in India have disproportionately poor health outcomes. This is mainly because the public services are of poor quality and good quality services are expensive. Our work is aimed at improving health services for poor and marginalised communities by strengthening their engagement. CHSJ has been involved in developing and piloting the Community Monitoring component of the National Rural Health Mission through the AGCA It is working with communities and authorities in over 25 districts in five states to strengthen reproductive health programme (RMNCH+A)

Strengthening Community Based Initiatives
Building the capacity of community level groups has been a core strategy of CHSJ and we work in close partnership with 15 such partners. CHSJ started a new initiative in the city of Kolkata, called Kolkata Initiatives is a city specific intervention with the primary objective to create a ‘virtuous’ loop of community engagement where the more affluent section of society is being encouraged to support the more marginalised.  Kolkata Initiatives has started with Women’s Community Centres in the slums of South Kolkata providing elderly women an opportunity for dignity, fight alienation while looking after their health and well being
