Men and Gender Equality Policy Project

There has been a long standing call for involving men as partners in the process of creating a gender equitable world. However there are few large programmes which have attempted to incorporate men’s involvement systematically A global review of field level studies indicate that adult and young men can change their gender related attitudes and behaviours. Small programmatic interventions are often limited when the larger policy environment does not support interventions with men. In order to understand the current policy reality in terms of the understanding of men’s roles and responsibilities in contributing to gender equality, CHSJ and SAHAYOG have been participating in this multi-country project jointly coordinated by Instituto Promundo, Brazil and International Centre for Research on Women, Washington D.C.  As a part of the continuing inquiry process, CHSJ was involved in conducting a study “Men Who Care” which aimed to examine the possible impact/ role the policies may have had on men who are involved in (alternative) roles of care giving or in care giving professions. Nineteen respondents from Delhi, Pune and Lucknow were included in the study and the analysis is ongoing.

The report prepared by CHSJ and SAHAYOG analyses five policy documents that are national in scope, though local and regional in implementation, with the intention of observing how gender and masculinity are placed in the context of achieving gender equality
