Leadership Development Programme
The Leadership Development Programme (LDP) to improve Effectivity, Accountability, and Communitisation of health system, is a collaborative effort between the Centre for Health and Social Justice (CHSJ), the Population Leadership Program at the University of Washington, and the National Institute of Health and Family Welfare (NIHFW), which took place from July 17th to the 21st at the NIHFW training campus in Munirka, New Delhi.
The LDP was attended by 32 participants who applied and were selected from all over India. All participants have been engaged with public health issues in various capacities, with a focus on the country’s current health program, the National Rural Health Mission (2005-2012). One of the strengths of the LDP is the diversity of the participants, who ranged from those working within the government structure to international NGOs to peoples health movements. The program emphasized and encouraged the building of inter-sectoral and inter-organizational relationship as a key point to leadership and capacity building in the context of national health system improvement efforts.
The resource team of the LDP was as diverse as its participants, and included both local and international trainers from the University of Washington’s Population Leadership Program, School of Public Health, and the School of Architecture, NIHFW, New Delhi, and CHSJ, New Delhi.
One of the aims of the LDP was to create a culture of partnership and collaboration between individuals working in governmental and non-governmental to achieve common goals. The topics covered included the social determinants of health, community mobilization, engagement and action, interpersonal communication, and the politics and health. The training used interactive methods such as group projects, presentations, readings, and discussions, to promote the learning and practice of leadership development.
