The Centre informed the Supreme Court that all marriages in the age group of 16 to 18 should be treated as voidable at the instance of either party to avoid the problem of girls below the age of 16 giving consent for marriage and making it valid. Additional Solicitor-General Indira Jaising, explaining the government's stand before a Bench of Justices Dalveer Bhandari and A.K. Ganguly, wanted the court to intervene in this regard. The Bench was hearing a petitions filed by National Commission for Women questioning a Delhi High Court order upholding the marriage of a girl who had not reached the age of 18. Read more
