An 86-year-old woman sarpanch has announced financial help of Rs 5,100 for every girl child born to a poor family in her village. She hopes the small step would begin to correct the horribly skewed sex ratio that Haryana villages are notorious for. Sarpanch of Bhateri Devi of Ridua, who’s married to ex-Indian National Army soldier Daya Singh, and has six sons, says even the smallest measure must be taken to correct the worsening gender imbalance. Haryana’s sex ratio is 850 girls for every 1,000 male births.
