An impressive 62% decline in protein-energy malnutrition over the last two decades and the emergence of road injury as a major factor for mortality are the highlights of a report on the burden of diseases in South Asia released on Thursday. Diarrhoea and lower respiratory infection (LRI), too, have declined but still figure along with preterm birth complications among the top three causes of years lost to disability and mortality in the region in 2010. Ischemic heart diseases figured fourth.
