Concerned about the skewed sex ratio in Maharashtra, the State Government has decided to restrict sale of ‘abortion pills' by including them in scheduled drugs' list. As a result, the pills would not be available without doctor's prescription. “We are planning to make medical prescription compulsory for buying the abortion pills...I have given directions to include the pills in scheduled category,” Health Minister Suresh Shetty has said. The decision came after a meeting of a State-level committee appointed to implement the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex selection) Act, 1994.
