Does higher literacy translate into better human development indicators? Not necessarily; certainly not when it comes to gender equality among children. The provisional Census figures available so far for Madhya Pradesh show that the Child Sex Ratio (CSR) in the State is the highest in Alirajpur, the district with the lowest level of literacy. Alirajpur drew a lot of flak from the media for being an embarrassment to the State on account of its abysmal literacy level of 37.22% -- among the worst in the country. Read more
