Nine babies have died at the VSS medical College and Hospital in Odisha’s Sambalpur district since Friday, five of them of birth asphyxia and two others because of low birth weight. Two more have succumbed to septicaemia. “The high number of deaths is shocking. But the cause of death was different for each child,” said Superintendent Dr L K Dash. He said eight of the nine children were referred cases, all brought to the hospital in critical conditions.
