A local court awarded three-year rigorous imprisonment each to five Haryana doctors for illegally offering prenatal sex selection services to pregnant women. The accused worked as private practitioners in Palam Vihar area of Gurgaon. Besides the jail term, the court has also slapped a fine of Rs.1,000 on each of them. They were held guilty under Section 23 of the Prenatal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation & Prevention of Misuse) Act of 1994. The accused doctors were offering prenatal sex selection services to parents who wanted male offspring and were charging huge fees from them. They were running this illegal business from a private hospital named Albega Hospital, said a police officer. Read more
