Child marriage continues to be a scourge of Namakkal district. Five child marriages were performed in less than a month at Jambumadai hamlet near Erumapatty in the district. A revenue official, who has been entrusted with the responsibility of stopping child marriages, told The Hindu that a 15-year-old girl of Ponkurichi village in Rasipuram Taluk was married to a 32-year-old man of A.Natamangalam village in Namakkal taluk. District Collector J. Kumaragurubaran said “a circular is underway to marriage halls and temples covered under the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) to verify the age of the bride and the groom – as mentioned in government certificates – before permitting them for the wedding”.
