DGHS to hire nurses on contract in its city hospital

The three city hospitals under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) will soon start hiring nurses on contract basis. To check if recruitment on contract would lead to better work culture and patient-care, the DGHS has decided to implement the system in Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Sucheta Kripalani Hospital and Safdarjung Hospital.

This high incidence of sexual harassment, both in the organised and the unorganised sectors, was revealed in an opinion poll titled ‘Sexual Harassment at Workplaces in India 2011-2012” released by Oxfam India.

A day after the Union Government rolled out cash transfer for subsidies and entitlements, Jan Sansad, a coalition of more than 60 people’s movement, rejected it for being “anti-people”. Terming the scheme “an attempt by the government to wash off its hands from the responsibility to provide basic services and social security to its citizens”, the coalition said direct cash transfer will have disastrous impact on the lives of the marginalised who are dependent on the Public Distribution System (PDS) and other forms of entitlements in health and education.

Pregnant HIV-positive women a concern in Jharkhand

The number of pregnant women testing HIV positive in Jharkhand is a cause of concern, a Unicef statement said Thursday. According to data released by the Jharkhand unit of Unicef, based on National Aids Control Society (NACO) findings, till September this year, 66 of 69,200 pregnant women were found to be HIV positive. The number was 76 of 61,500 in 2011.

Scheme workers demand minimum wages, recognition as workers

About 50,000 'scheme workers', majority of them women, from 24 states converged on Delhi's Jantar Mantar on Monday for a two-day maha padao (sit-in protest) organized by CITU, the trade union affiliated to CPM. Among them are anganwadi wokers, social health activists, mid-day meal workers, para teachers, krishak sathis and thousands of women who work in various flagship schemes of the Centre, but are not paid even minimum wages.

35,000 dengue cases reported in India this year

India has recorded over 35,000 dengue cases in 2012, the highest number in a year so far, parliament was told Tuesday. In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Health Abu Haseem Khan Choudhary said total 216 dengue deaths were reported till mid November this year across the country.
