CBI registers four more cases in Uttar Pradesh NRHM fund scam

Four more cases have been registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation in connection with the alleged irregularities in the use of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) funds in Uttar Pradesh. The agency, which has registered 18 cases so far pertaining to the alleged scam, conducted searches at over a dozen places in Delhi, Ghaziabad, Agra and Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, besides Rudrapur in Uttarakhand and Vapi in Gujarat.

Ministry to build ‘pucca’ anganwadis

517 dengue cases, two deaths in Bengal

Kolkata: 31st August 2012

The number of confirmed dengue cases in West Bengal has gone up to 517, of which two patients including a nine-year-old girl have died, the state health department said Thursday. "Two people have died of dengue and the total number of cases is 517. In Kolkata alone, there are 323 cases of dengue," said a health department statement.

Lok Nayak Hospital to test for haemophilia in the womb

Lok Nayak (LN) Hospital, in association with Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), will start prenatal tests of foetuses for haemophilia — a first in any Delhi government hospital. Pregnant women will be first put through a genetic screening to check if they are carriers of haemophilia. After that, foetuses of those who test positive will be put through a DNA test to check for the disease that has no permanent cure.

How sickle cell gene protects against malaria

A team of U.S. scientists has identified a new and surprising way in which those with the gene that causes sickle cell disease are protected from the ravages of malaria. People who develop sickle cell disease have inherited from both parents defective versions of a gene for haemoglobin, the iron-containing protein in red blood cells that transports oxygen from the lungs to tissues in the body.

Balaghat (Madhya Pradesh): 30th August 2012

In a startling revelation, official sources said here on Wednesday that 3,200 women went for sex determination tests to the neighbouring Gondia district in Maharashtra. The information was provided by the Maharashtra Health Department to Balaghat officials after reports that a large number of women were taking gender determination tests in Gondia.
