The Karnataka government will soon set up a yoga and naturopathy council and allot 10 per cent of the health budget in the ensuing fiscal (2012-13) to promote Indian systems of medicine comprising Ayurvedic, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (Ayush). "Yoga and naturopathy are two native therapies that can prevent and cure several physical and psychosomatic ailments, especially diabetes and HIV+ cases, which have been increasing in the country of late.
A 35-year-old mentally retarded and childless man was allegedly taken away and vasectomised in the district hospital in Rewa, under the government’s sterilisation drive. Ramavtar Gupta, a resident of Mahsaw village, underwent vasectomy in the district hospital on Thursday.

Hundreds of HIV positive people staged a march in the city on Friday to protest against the free trade agreement between the European Union and India.They were demanding a white paper on the pact and wide consultation with stakeholders before implementation. The rally with protesters carrying giant inflated medicine pills was held from Mandi House to Parliament Street around 10 am.

The ministry of urban development has said in a recent order that charitable societies and trusts which got land at concessional rates to set up hospitals will have to provide free treatment to poor patients. The six hospitals named in the order include Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, St Stephen’s Hospital, VIMHANS, Moolchand Hospital, Primus Ortho Hospital and Jessa Ram Hospital.
The shortage of ambulances in the city is likely to end soon as the government has approved the purchase of 70 new vehicles. The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by health minister AK Walia on Wednesday. The minister told TOI that the new ambulances are being purchased from funds released by the Central government under National Rural Health Mission (NRHM).
A commonly used drug, Exemestane, taken by early breast cancer patients in India — as frequently as once a day for five years — has been found to cause significant bone loss, even when they are given adequate calcium and vitamin D intake. The drug has been found to worsen age-related decrease in bone mineral density by about three times, increasing risks of fractures manifold. In a study published in the “Lancet”, researchers from Canada said the drug causes loss of cortical bone that comprises 80% of the skeleton.

Revamping the healthcare system in the state, Haryana government has decided to install ‘health wall’ in every village of the state. This health wall will display the sex ratio, number of expecting mothers, immunization status and the healthcare facilities available in that village. This nearly 75-lakh project will be started from Gurgaon district and gradually all other 20 districts will be covered.

The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the Centre on a writ petition alleging that illegal clinical trials of untested drugs were being conducted by pharmaceutical companies on adults, children and even mentally ill persons in various States. The Indore-based Swasthya Adhikar Manch was the petitioner. NGO's counsel Sanjay Parikh told the Bench of Justices R.M. Lodha and H.L. Gokhale that in a large number of cases, multinational corporations were using contract research organisations for carrying out clinical trials of unapproved drugs.

In existence for nearly two decades, India's HIV-AIDS control mission has been the most successful global model to deal with the disease, the head of the country's AIDS control panel said Monday. "NACO is a global success model. The way India has brought down HIV infections from nearly 50 percent, it has been appreciated all across the world," National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) director general Sayan Chatterjee said at the South Asian Forum for Health Research (SAFHeR) here.

Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said Monday drug trials should be as per laid down procedures. "Clinical trials have to be there, but going for a clinical trial for testing any medicine on human being, there is a laid down procedure," Azad said, reacting to the apex court's notice to the central government on a plea seeking investigation into illegal and unethical clinical trials.
