More than 40% children in pre-school age of 0-five years are suffering from anaemia in India. Although the prevalence of anaemia is estimated at 9% in countries with high development, in countries with low development the prevalence is as high as 43%. Anaemia is estimated to contribute to more than 1.15 lakh maternal deaths, and 5.91 lakh prenatal deaths globally per year. Asia and Africa account for more than 85% of the absolute anemia burden in high-risk groups. These are the findings of a paper published in the British medical journal, The Lancet. Read more
