EVALUATION OF PROJECT INTERVENTIONS

Family Health Campaign: Accountability for Change (Sajhedar Initiative)

The Family Health Campaign or the Sajhedar initiative, was a three year long intervention in two districts of Madhya Pradesh to engage men as responsible partners and fathers, with the objective of improving overall maternal health of women. It also sought to raise awareness of maternal health entitlements in the community and empower communities to demand maternal health services.

The baseline study was done to understand the ground realities related to maternal health; health seeking behaviour; social beliefs and norms; family planning and use of contraceptive methods; understanding of gender issues; partnership; parenting; knowledge on health entitlements under National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) in Sidhi and Morena districts of Madhya Pradesh. The main objective of the baseline study was to find out the current ground realities with respect to men’s behaviour and attitude towards their roles and responsibilities as partners in the area of their own and partner’s health and parenting. For distilling the impact of the three-year long Sajhedar project, an endline evaluation was conducted in Morena and Sidhi districts in 2014. A report describing the changes that took place due to the Sajhedar intervention was prepared. This included drawing data from the baseline and endline studies, mid-term reviews, a qualitative endline study, analysis of stories of change and two PRAs conducted in the project period. The report describes the changes that have taken place in the intervention area in accordance with the programme theory. A working paper has also been prepared based on this data.

Yuva Samanta Ki Or: Working with Young Men and Boys for Introducing New Gender related Social Norms in the State of Rajasthan, India

The Centre for Health and Social Justice has been pioneering an approach to working with men and boys on social justice issues and our experience is that men and boys can be involved in changing social hierarchies at the family and household level if they are involved as partners in a joint quest of equality and social justice.  This approach is based on our understanding that patriarchy and gender divisions which are responsible for the control and subordinate position of women, and for male privileges, are not always advantageous to all men.

Since 2014, CHSJ is implementing a project in 30 villages in Bundi and Udaipur districts, Rajasthan two partner organisations which work directly with the adolescents in their respective areas. This approach enables to distil robust lessons and test and develop a model which can be applied at a larger scale.
A baseline study to understand the knowledge, attitude and behaviour of the adolescents and young men on reproductive and sexual health, current gender norms in the community and access to public adolescent health services was undertaken. The study used mixed methods of a survey with adolescent boys and focus group discussions with boys, girls and other stakeholders. The study has shown the prevalence of discriminatory norms against women and girls, very few girls go for higher education and marriage before the legal age is very common.
