YUVA-SAMAANTA KI OAR-
​WORKING WITH YOUNG MEN AND BOYS FOR INTRODUCING NEW GENDER RELATED SOCIAL NORMS
Yuva-Samaanta Ki Oar initiative started to engage adolescent boys and young men to challenge gender norms and transform their attitude and behaviors towards gender equality. The approach of directly working young men and boys enables to distill robust lessons and test and develop a model for replication. Project approach is based on patriarchal gender divisions in society reinforce control over and subordination of women to men. Project directs to address the evidences emerged in baseline study on attitudes of youth regarding gender practices, reproductive health and use of contraceptives in project area.  Monthly group meetings, quarterly reviews, gender participatory rural appraisal, mapping training, of stories of change and challenges and a community campaign on girl child education, early marriage and gender discrimination were conducted. Individual and collective changes have started emerging and the stories of changes and challenges being recorded.
 
Objectives
 
At the community level:
 
  • Bring about changes in gender and sexuality related attitudes among young men and boys
  • Increase their knowledge about reproductive and sexual health and rights
  • Bring about changes in gender elated roles at home and in community of young men and boys
  • Increase participation of young men and boys on developing new social norms in community
 
At the level of project intervention:
 
  • To develop a tested intervention which can support work with young men and boys to achieve above community related goals and objectives
 
At the level of development practices
 
  • To demonstrate the possibility of addressing gender discriminatory social norms and improving gender relations and improving women’s health and well being, through a programmatic interventions with young men and boys
 
Project Area: Project is being implementing in 60 villages of two blocks of two districts of Rajasthan
