Civil Society meeting with UN Rapporteur on Right to Health, 23 Dec 2007, New Delhi

Paul Hunt, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health was on a Mission to India between November 22nd and December 3, 2007. The visit focused specifically on maternal mortality and the issue was examined in the context of field visits to Rajasthan and Maharashtra. A short civil society meeting was convened by the UN on 23rd December, at the beginning of the field visit. A more comprehensive interaction between civil society actors involved in the issue and the UN Special Rapporteur took place in New Delhi on the 1st of December. During this meeting, civil society representatives from ten states provided short state level submissions. There were also thematic presentations around four themes. Paul Hunt also provided a brief summary of his findings from his mission. The mission team also included Lynn Friedman, Chair AMDD, Columbia University, a expert on reproductive rights. The organisers of this meeting included Healthwatch Forum, Women's Health and Rights Partnership (WHRAP) and Coalition on Maternal Neonatal Health and Safe Abortion (CMNHSA).
