CHSJ has been forefront of raising issues of quality of care and informed choice in family planning programme. In the year 2013-14, community based monitoring methodology has been developed to monitor to assess informed choice and quality of care in family planning services by involving women of the community itself. This year, with the help of Health Watch Forums, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, community based monitoring work has been replicated in 10 districts, five in each of the two states. The CBM exercise included discussions with women where the experience of women who are intended as well as actual beneficiaries of the family planning programme was understood. Score cards were prepared for each of the ten districts, wherein the performance of each district State and district level public hearings were also organised in each of district and shared the community experiences with health service providers. The findings from two states-Uttar Pradesh and Bihar brought back the issue of lack of quality, lack of informed choices and poor quality family planning services in India.
