Infant deaths in Coimbatore district have declined by 15.36 per cent during 2012-13 after having risen during the past two consecutive years. The total number of births in the district rose by 13.66 per cent during 2012-13.

To help urban poor go to health facilities after working hours, urban primary health centres, planned under the National Urban Health Mission (NUHM), will function from noon to 8 p.m. Out-patient departments at standard health facilities worked only in the morning; when patients had to go to work, visiting a doctor or hospital would mean losing a day’s salary, Anuradha Gupta, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, said.

The Delhi Cabinet on Monday approved the installation of 120 dialysis machines in six Delhi government hospitals aimed at providing free treatment to economically weaker sections of society. The Cabinet also approved the new excise policy for the year 2013-2014, which signals an increase of between five and 11 per cent in liquor prices of different categories.

Mumbai witnessed a 44% rise in the number of abortions last year, data from the city’s municipal body has shown.While 19,701 abortions were registered in 2011, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data from various public and private hospitals and nursing homes in 2012 showed 28,455 abortions.

The number of females has increased over the past ten years in Tripura with sex ratio standing at 960 against per thousand males, according to final census report-2011.  While the number of women stood at 948 against per thousand males in the 2001 census, it rose to 960 in the 2011 census report, said Deputy Director of Census Operations Aparesh Chowdhury.

Draft identifies it as a major health problem in State.  The draft nutrition policy being finalised by the State government identifies anaemia as a major health problem in the State, especially among women and children.  More women and children have anaemia in 2005-06 than in 1999-99, the draft compares figures from the National Family Health Surveys held those years.
